International Role Of Canada
Since 1945, Canada's international role has greatly changed. As an illustration, from the formation of the United Nations, Canada has always been quite involved within it. By keeping the world peace, encouraging cooperation, promoting equality and even improving the standard of living, this gave Canada many chances to become more familiar with other countries while saving the world from destruction at the same time. On another note, with Canada contributing with many different crisis's such as the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Suez Crisis, Canada should be take pride in its International role from 1945-2000.
After World War 1, Canada found itself in a situation between to opposing forces, the United States and the USSR. However, due to Canada's involvement in NORAD and NATO, they made a decision to stick with the United States because of their mutual involvement in these groups. With this relationship things led to influence from the United States to Canada. Some people thought of this as a threat to Canada's self governing, now that they were separate from Britain. John Diefenbaker took initiative and made a decision and refused to put Canada's NORAD army on alert. Although this was a harmless action to try and save Canada's government, this left many citizens angry and the United States infuriated.
